Think healthy eating has to be boring? Think again!
Many people try to eat “healthy” and they cut out all the flavor thinking they are doing something good for themselves. But the reality is, “healthy” eating doesn’t have to be bland and if you don’t like something, you likely won’t keep eating it! So, if you want to stick to your healthy eating plan, you better make it taste good!
This National Nutrition Month, amp up the flavor by making some nutrient-rich twists on your favorite foods!
Love pizza? Make it with fruit, veggies and whole grain crust! This not only adds nutrients, but it also adds fiber which helps you feel fuller longer after eating.
Favorite food tacos? Try making tacos with lean ground beef, sauteed veggies and avocado in corn tortillas, whole wheat tortillas or even lettuce wraps. Or if you want a plant flare, sauté pistachios, hominy, cumin and chili powder. Top with an avocado slaw and pickled red onions.
Pasta queen? While there are many nutrient-rich pasta choices, it can add up to lots of calories so try using half whole grain pasta and half zoodles! Add zucchini noodles to your pasta adds volume and nutrients without added calories.
Burger buff? Use lean ground beef for your burger patty, add 2% cheese, sauteed mushrooms and onions, lettuce, tomato and use mashed avocado as your spread. Layer that between a 100% whole grain bun and you have a burger with all five food groups!
Sweet tooth? Did you know there is dark chocolate hummus and it tastes like a rich chocolate pudding? Use dippers like apples, berries and whole grain pretzels and you have a satisfying, sweet snack you can feel good about eating!
So, forget about what you can’t eat and start focusing on what you can add to your favorite foods to improve their nutrient quality and taste!
