Vacation Without the Guilt: How to Indulge Mindfully While Traveling

Vacations are a time to enjoy delicious food, but that doesn’t mean throwing your health goals out the window. With a little intention, you can indulge mindfully and feel good during and after your trip. Try these simple strategies:

  • Follow the 80/20 rule. Make nutritious, energizing choices 80% of the time and enjoy special treats guilt-free the other 20%. This allows you to enjoy your favorite foods, while still keeping it well fueled with protein, fiber, and produce, which all help with providing the body with energy!
  • Balance your plate. At meals, aim for half veggies, a quarter protein, and a quarter carbs—even at restaurants or buffets. If you’re going to be super active, re-shape your plate into thirds to fuel your activity.
  • Watch portion sizes. Split entrees, order appetizers as meals, or ask for a to-go box to avoid overeating. Eating often can help you from feeling too hungry at meals or snacks.
  • Stay active. Walk to explore, swim, or sneak in bodyweight exercises—movement helps balance out indulgences. Stay active and you’ll stay more energized on your vacation.
  • Hydrate often. Water helps curb overeating, supports digestion, and helps counter extra alcohol intake and salty foods.

Vacations are about enjoyment and memories, and with mindful choices, you can return feeling refreshed—not regretful. So fuel up and enjoy mindfully!
