Sip Smart: Stay Hydrated from First Bell to Final Whistle

Hydration doesn’t begin when practice starts—it begins the moment you wake up and continues throughout the entire school day. Waiting until you’re thirsty often means you’re already behind. Building simple hydration habits during school helps athletes stay energized, focused, and ready to perform.

  • Start your morning with fluids. After sleeping for several hours, your body naturally wakes up slightly dehydrated. Drinking water with breakfast and including foods like fruit, yogurt, or milk helps replace lost fluids early in the day.
  • Carry a refillable water bottle everywhere. Having water within reach makes it much more likely you’ll drink consistently instead of trying to catch up later. Refill it between classes, at lunch, and before heading to practice.
  • Eat foods that hydrate, too. Fluids don’t only come from beverages. Watermelon, oranges, grapes, cucumbers, tomatoes, berries, lettuce, yogurt, and milk all contribute to your daily hydration.
  • Know when sports drinks are helpful. For practices lasting longer than an hour, intense workouts, or exercising in hot weather, sports drinks can help replace carbohydrates and electrolytes lost through sweat. Water is still the best choice for most classroom hours and shorter activities.
  • Watch for signs you’re falling behind. Headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, muscle cramps, dark urine, and feeling unusually thirsty can all signal dehydration. Staying ahead with regular sips throughout the day is much easier than trying to rehydrate all at once.

Good hydration is one of the simplest ways to support better learning, better workouts, and better recovery. Make drinking fluids part of your daily routine, and you’ll give your body the foundation it needs to perform from the first bell to the final whistle.
