Back to School, Back to Sports: 5 Fueling Wins for the Busy Season

September is here, and for young athletes, that often means school, practices, games, homework, and activities all competing for time. When schedules get packed, nutrition can quickly become an afterthought, but a few simple fueling habits can help athletes maintain energy, support recovery, and perform their best from the classroom to the field.

  • Start the day fueled. Breakfast provides the energy athletes need after an overnight fast and helps set the tone for a long day. Pair carbohydrates with protein by choosing options like oatmeal with milk and peanut butter, eggs with whole-grain toast and fruit, or Greek yogurt with granola and berries.
  • Plan fuel for the in-between. The hours between lunch and after-school practice can be a major fueling gap, especially if lunch is early in the school day. Pack a carbohydrate-and-protein snack like a granola bar with string cheese, crackers with turkey, Greek yogurt with fruit, or a peanut butter sandwich to provide energy heading into practice.
  • Keep carbohydrates on the menu. Busy athletes need carbohydrates to help fuel working muscles, and longer school and training days can increase their energy needs. Include foods like whole-grain bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, fruit, cereal, tortillas, and dairy throughout the day instead of waiting until the pre-game meal to load up on carbs.
  • Make hydration part of the school schedule. Athletes should not wait until practice to start drinking fluids. Carry a water bottle and use natural reminders throughout the day, such as drinking at breakfast, between classes, with lunch, and during the afternoon before heading to practice.
  • Prioritize recovery before homework takes over. After practice, athletes need carbohydrates to replenish energy stores and protein to help repair and rebuild muscle. Chocolate milk, a fruit smoothie with Greek yogurt, a turkey sandwich with fruit, or dinner with lean protein, grains, and vegetables can help kick-start recovery.

The busiest seasons are often when consistent nutrition matters most. Building a few fueling habits into the school-day routine can help athletes stay energized, recover well, and be ready to perform day after day.
