Did you know May is actually National Burger Month? It’s a common misconception that burgers are “unhealthy” for you – and while a double cheeseburger with bacon, mayo, and all types of creamy spreads may not be the best option, that doesn’t mean you have to cut out this American classic entirely. With a little bit of forethought and a few swaps, burgers can be a nutrient-rich, balanced meal. Try these twists to amp up the nutrition without sacrificing on flavor! Go lean! Ground beef is not only an excellent source of high-quality protein, but it’s packed with other nutrients our bodies need like iron and vitamin B12. To cut down on some of the saturated fat, pick a leaner variety of beef, such as 93/7 or even 90/10. Add colorful veggies! A traditional burger typically comes with lettuce and tomato, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop there! Get creative with other veggie toppings, such as sauteed mushrooms, arugula, roasted peppers, onions, and more! Not only will the vegetables add important micronutrients and fiber, but crisp fresh veggies can add mouthwatering flavor and texture. Bun, or no bun! If you’re keeping it classic, you don’t have to sacrifice nutrition on the bun. Skip the white bun and choose a whole grain bun to amp up the fiber. If you’re looking to cut down on calories even more, try out two pieces of lettuce to make a wrap. Or, you could even add your patty and burger ingredients to a fresh salad instead. Swap the spread! Many people load the burger with mayo and creamy sauces, but to swap saturated fat or good fat, try mashed avocado or a flavored hummus instead. Traditional options like mustard and ketchup also work! Be smart with sides! It can be easy to load up your plate with sides like chips, queso, potato salad, and more. Use fresh veggies for dips like guacamole or hummus, have a side salad or a bowl of fruit. You can even make a better-for-you ranch dip using low-fat greek yogurt and ranch seasoning. Next time you’re grilling out at the family BBQ, you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging in a good burger. The foods we love can still taste good and be nutritious! |
