Create Your Fuel Schedule: Eat Around the Bell, Not Just Around Practice

The school year brings structure to an athlete’s day, but it can also make it easy to go too long without eating. When classes, practices, homework, and extracurricular activities fill the schedule, having a fueling plan can make the difference between steady energy and running on empty. Instead of wondering when you’ll eat, build a nutrition schedule that works with your school day.

  • Start with breakfast before the first bell. Skipping breakfast often means starting the day in an energy deficit that’s difficult to recover from. A bowl of oatmeal with milk, nuts, and berries, eggs with whole-grain toast and fruit, or Greek yogurt with granola provides carbohydrates for energy and protein to support muscles.
  • Plan a mid-morning snack if lunch is several hours away. Four or five hours between meals can leave athletes distracted, tired, and hungry before lunch. Pack easy options like a cheese stick with crackers, trail mix, a banana with peanut butter, or a yogurt pouch to keep energy steady.
  • Use lunch as your performance meal. Lunch should refill energy stores for the rest of the school day and prepare your body for afternoon practice. Aim for lean protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy—for example, a turkey sandwich, apple, pretzels, carrots, and milk.
  • Schedule a pre-practice snack. Most athletes need something 30-90 minutes before training. Choose foods rich in carbohydrates with a little protein, such as a granola bar, peanut butter sandwich, pretzels with string cheese, or chocolate milk and a banana.
  • Don’t forget recovery after practice. Within an hour after activity, combine carbohydrates and protein to jump-start recovery. Chocolate milk, a turkey wrap, cottage cheese with fruit, or a smoothie are simple ways to help muscles recover before dinner.

When you plan your meals and snacks the same way you plan your classes and practices, fueling becomes automatic. A simple schedule helps you stay energized, focused, and ready to perform from the first bell to the final whistle.
